Norton Utilities are software utilities published by Peter Norton, with his first version for DOS. The Windows version was initially released for Windows 95 and is today manufactured along with Norton Systemworks and does not come as a separate package. Since 1990, Symantec now manufacture all products of Norton. A few problems with the Norton utilities have cost it its reputation and have given its competitors a clear edge over it. Though it solves a number of problems these problems have caused it lose a number of customers. Some of the problems faced by Norton Utilities are listed below.
The first problem is that there is a loop in the Norton AV2K, which is used to scan new mail in the inbox; it opens a port making the PC accessible to hackers. Even after Symantec released a patch for the AV Port, the problem still existed
The next problem that exists is that Norton's "Live Update" that updates the patch causes the system to perform slowly and makes it unstable.
Norton Antivirus 5.0 (even 4) with its security policies causes frontpages to take time to load on the PC.
Norton Utilities 4.0 has a few problems of its own, which are faced by many users. One of the major problems that users have to deal with is the loss of data after using Norton Disk Doctor 4.0. Also, when using Norton Utilities Version 3.0, when upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 2000, a lot of the applications are incompatible with the operating system. The applications that generally are rendered useless are-
· Norton Image Disk
· Norton Disk Doctor
· Norton Speed Disk
· Norton Registry Tracker
· System Information
After installation of Windows 2000 Professional, the System Information tool is the only one that is removed from the Start Menu list.
The next problem that is seen is that when starting a program that includes Norton Utilities the following error message is seen at times- Missing Entry Point in KERNEL32.DLL. The next few problems are seen with the other application, a description of the problem is listed. Image, Speed Disk and Speed Wizard all are designed for Windows 95 and does not run on any other operating system, so it is best to reinstall Windows 95 or restart in the same mode and Rescue Disk version does not run on Windows NT. The problem with Norton Disk Doctor is that it does not load the system file NDDENGNT.DLL and the Norton UnErase Protection Service does not get loaded on any other version. Symantec has acknowledged as well that the 2004 and 2005 editions of Symantec Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, and Norton System Works have two low-key problems, it was found by a Japanse IT promotion Agency.
The problem was that with the Auto-Protect and SmartScan features on, IPA researchers found that renaming any file on the shared network folder could cause the syatem that runs Norton Antivirus to crash. And the second problem was identified by Japan Computer Emergency Response Team (JPCERT), they realized that Norton AntiVirus 2004 and 2005 crshed when a specific type of file that Symatec declined to identify when it was being scanned by Auto-Protect.
