An Education in Security
Vocational schools can offer several different types of security education, from homeland security, to computer information security. Some formal training in security can prepare you for a diverse field of employment in either the securing of electronic information or the securing of safety and property. The choice is yours.
In training security specialists, vocational and trade schools offer a choice of credentials including certificates and degrees in security. The amount and type of security training required for any particular profession can vary greatly. For instance, if you are preparing for a position in computer information security (IS), your classes will be focused on computer science and technology, including math, sciences, programming, implementation, and troubleshooting. Other students may choose business courses in management and administration of security technology systems. Vocational and trade schools offer certificates, diplomas, Associate of Arts (AA) degrees, and Associate of Science (AS) degrees in computer and information technology (IT).
On the other hand, if you are more interested in protecting private property or protecting the safety of individuals and groups, you should consider schools that offer security officer training. There are numerous vocational schools and colleges providing security training in criminal justice for those who will go on to the professions of security officers, professional bodyguards, property loss prevention specialists, and forensic scientists.
You can also gain training that is specialized in law enforcement and protective services to qualify for positions as police officer, prison guard, dispatcher, or homeland security specialist, just to name a few. The point is, security training at all levels can help you develop a better understanding and improved skills for human services, analysis, and management of security matters.
